Iran, Russia’s Astrakhan seek to ease trade barriers and expand business ties

Iran and Russia’s Astrakhan region discussed ways to expand trade and remove barriers facing businesses, including regulatory requirements, transport links and the implementation of existing agreements, the Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce said.

During a visit to Astrakhan, Joint Chamber Chairman Hadi Teyhoosh Taban held talks with officials including Natalia Nikeshina, deputy head of Russia’s consumer protection and human welfare watchdog in the region, and newly appointed Astrakhan Chamber of Commerce and Industry head Viktoria Kelikanova. Teyhoosh Taban and Nikeshina discussed mandatory product labeling requirements and Russia’s Honest Sign (Chestny ZNAK) tracking system, as well as liabilities for non-compliance, in a meeting at the Iranian Business House in Astrakhan. In talks with Kelikanova, the sides discussed preparations for the 23rd meeting of the International Council of Business Chambers of the Caspian Sea (ICBC), which is scheduled to be held in Astrakhan next spring. They also called for stronger direct links between businesses, including through trade delegations, exhibitions and B2B meetings, and stressed the need to turn existing memorandums of understanding into concrete projects. Teyhoosh Taban also highlighted the importance of maintaining a direct Rasht-Astrakhan flight to facilitate travel by traders, investors and tourists and support closer economic ties. Separately, he met Iranian Consul General in Astrakhan Ahmad Heydarian to discuss obstacles facing Iranian traders and ways to increase trade, transport, logistics, port and tourism cooperation between northern Iranian provinces and southern Russian regions. The sides also discussed supporting Iranian businesses in Astrakhan and creating mechanisms for the regular follow-up of their commercial and administrative concerns.
