Iran stone industry could generate $5 billion in exports, association head says

Iran’s stone industry could generate at least $5 billion in export earnings if its capacity is properly supported and developed, Bahram Shakouri, head of the Iran Stone Association, said at a news conference ahead of the 18th Iran International Stone Exhibition.

More than 600 domestic and foreign companies are expected to attend the exhibition, which will be held from Oct. 6 to 9 in Mahallat and Nimvar, while business delegations from Russia, Pakistan, Turkey, India and Egypt have also been invited, Shakouri said. Iran produced about 10 million to 12 million tons of stone in 2024, but exports were worth only about $230 million, he said. That compared with global stone exports valued at around $42 billion, highlighting Iran’s limited share of the international market. About 85% of Iran’s stone production is processed and consumed domestically, while roughly 15% is exported, Shakouri said. Around 5% of total production is exported as raw blocks and 10% as cut stone. The international exhibition could provide a platform for foreign buyers to see Iran’s diverse range of stone products in one location rather than visiting individual mines, allowing them to select products and place orders, Shakouri said.
