“Iran-Russia-Belarus trade needs integrated roadmap”

Iran needs an integrated roadmap for foreign trade to expand economic ties with Russia and Belarus, including coordination of trade, currency, banking and transport policies, Iran Chamber of Commerce Vice President Qadir Qiafeh said.

Speaking at a meeting of Iranian and Belarusian businesspeople in Minsk, Qiafeh said Iran’s trade corridors were in place but needed greater capacity and efficiency. Transport costs and restrictions, particularly on the rail route through Astara, continued to affect the competitiveness of Iranian goods in the Russian and Belarusian markets, he said. Qiafeh called for greater attention to the capacity of northern Iranian ports and the development of rail transport, saying greater use of these routes could reduce the cost of trade with Russia and other countries in the region. He also stressed the need for closer coordination among government bodies involved in economic policymaking, saying the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran should have greater authority and executive power. Currency and banking policies should also be aligned with the needs of the country’s foreign trade, he said. Qiafeh proposed inviting business development managers from Russian banks to Iran for a specialized seminar to examine banking capacities and ways to facilitate trade between the two countries.
