Iran sees room to expand trade with Vietnam and Southeast Asia

Iran sees significant potential to expand trade with Southeast Asian countries, particularly Vietnam, by strengthening commercial ties and developing new mechanisms to support bilateral trade, the head of the Iran-Vietnam Joint Chamber of Commerce said.

Mostafa Mousavi said Southeast Asian markets offered important opportunities for Iran to diversify its foreign trade, adding that countries such as Vietnam could play a more prominent role among Iran’s trading partners. “Southeast Asian markets are among the important opportunities for developing Iran’s trade,” Mousavi told the news website of Iran Chamber of Commerce. He said barter and goods-for-goods arrangements could help expand commercial exchanges and make greater use of Iran’s export capacity. Iranian exporters could use the value of exported goods to obtain imports needed by the country, helping maintain trade flows where conventional financial transfers are difficult. Mousavi said Iran’s trade presence varied across Southeast Asian markets, with China and India already among its major Asian trading partners. Vietnam and other countries in the region also offer scope for stronger economic cooperation, he said. He said changing conditions could create opportunities for more direct commercial links between Iran and Southeast Asian markets. “If conditions improve, there is an opportunity to strengthen Iran’s economic orientation toward the East and expand cooperation with Southeast Asian countries,” Mousavi said. He also stressed the importance of reliable financial channels and efficient transport infrastructure to support growing trade with East and Southeast Asia, saying stronger commercial mechanisms could help Iran make fuller use of its export potential and participate more actively in regional supply chains.
